As large numbers of African-American men began entering the prison system in droves in the mid-1980’s as a result of the war on drugs, African-American women and children were left behind which created a significant imbalance within families and communities.

The FAQs
Education research lets us know that there is a need to consider how we are addressing the achievement and opportunity gap for Black and Brown males. The narrative that they are underperforming and are deviants within the school setting is perpetuated far after they have left the traditional academic environment.
The conversation about race and student performance is valuable. The challenges that currently face the learning environment have to be resolved. Otherwise, they will continue to evolve into the socio-economic, legal, and judicial struggles of so many adult men.
We want to amplify the success stories of Black men to create a counternarrative that represents the truth of the matter. Higher aspirations become more attainable when the older generation is willing to put themselves in a position where the younger generation can stand on their shoulders.
